The small village of Obermorschwihr is situated at an altitude of 260 metres in the Vosges foothills some 10 kilometres south of Colmar. Its land is entirely devoted to winegrowing. At the heart of a privileged microclimate, and with very rich soils, especially on the "Bildstoeckle" slope, the village's 11 winegrowers apply all their skill and talent to produce the finest wines. This activity is shared by numerous families who tend their vines. The name of Obermorschwihr first appeared in a charter dated 913. Surrounded by fine old houses, the half-timbered church belfry, one of the rare examples in Alsace, is the pride and joy of the villagers. Obermorschwihr is lucky to be close to the prestigious site of Marbach, where the ruins of the Abbey of Marbach, founded in the 11th century, and modern buildings housing a specialised educational centre, unite in a splendid country setting. For a longer stay, the village offers "gîte" accommodation, and even a farm campsite. The village makes an excellent starting point for excursions, on foot or by bike, through the vineyards, the forest and the nearby plain, and to visit other typical villages in the Colmar region.
